Tolna

Track: Lasting

The Heatherlands is a temperate-to-warm region in southern Misthalin, known for the abundance of wild heather and the gentle ocean breeze combing the meadowgrasses like the hair of a young maiden. Though most of Misthalin is cool and rainy, this region sees comparatively less rain and comparatively more heat as the jet stream curves around White Wolf Mountain, blowing warm air from Kandarin down around Gielinor's southeastern coast. It's something of a vacation destination, though the moorland's no good for farming.

Huddled along the flatter coastal meadows towards the very southern tip of Misthalin is what locals would call "a harbor with it's own town" rather than the opposite. Waterlogged administrative buildings crowd the waterfront like spectators of a high-stakes card game. Ships throng the waters, frequently bumping into eachother; it seems the docks are never plentiful or long enough. Maritime officials and excise men swarm the pier, running to and fro meeting captains, ushering in charter ships, inspecting cargo holds. A splintering plank on the dock? Workers will replace it within the hour. Welcome to Tolna.

Behind the shore are a haphazard smattering of quaint limestone villas and dockworker dormitories. Pigs wallow in mud and sunkissed women pluck exotic sour fruits from backyard orchards (The growing of citrus is usually not permitted by Misthalin's climate). Children play and scream running up and down the cobblestone streets that coil around the hills like a serpent. Down at the harbor, husbands face life-threatening peril for their families, jumping between passing ships, dangling over deep waters, and scrambling up mast rigging all in the name of feeding Varrock's hunger for foreign goods and exotic luxuries from Kharidia, just beyond the horizon. Tolna is close enough to even suffer the occasional sandstorm blown across the sea by particularly powerful winds.

The actual town of Tolna itself is remarkably quiet. Almost all working-age people not taking care of families or running essential shops are keeping Misthalin's sole seabound link to the rest of the world running like clockwork. The southern peninsula is the only place in all of Misthalin to permit a port. Southwestern Misthalin? Too heavily forested. Eastern Misthalin? Sheer cliffs. Even Lumbridge, perfect as it would be for a massive sea trade operation, has a very low, silty seabed that doesn't allow for large vessels. To the Masters of the Exchange in Varrock, Tolna is a precious, precious pearl, though most Misthalinese would struggle to remember it even exists.

Tolna's only other major industry is its caravan companies, doing their part to transmute ship cargo into wagon cargo. Misthalin can be rather dangerous the further north you get, and Lumbridge Swamp is said to be riddled with exciting treasures left behind by decimated caravaneers. It's a brutal and difficult job, but someone has to get sugar and spices into the pantries of Varrock's aristocracy.

A sleepy bakery, a small performing theater, and tanner is all that Tolna offers its citizens. A tavern along the waterfront, owned by the harbormaster (and de facto governor of Tolna) typically sees year-round business, though. It's about the only fun place in town and is known for its poetry nights, breaded haddock, and numerous sex workers.
